In a membership-wide vote, an 85% supermajority of voting DSA Los Angeles members have voted to approve the chapter’s engagement in a coalition strategy to recall Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin de León, following leaked audio revealing his involvement in a racist, anti-Black, anti-renter conspiratorial conversation at city hall. Despite widespread condemnation, Councilmember de León has refused to resign. Following the election of Hugo Soto-Martínez and Eunisses Hernandez in the 2022 election cycle, we must build off our successes and respond to this moment to advance our pro-worker, pro-renter politics. You can read the full recommendation by the DSA-LA Electoral Committee in support of this plan here.

Councilmember de León represents Council District 14 (CD-14), which covers Boyle Heights, Downtown LA, El Sereno, Eagle Rock, and portions of Highland Park and Lincoln Heights. DSA Los Angeles is immediately reaching out to left, labor, and progressive coalition partners with the goal of launching a coalitional exploratory committee to recall Kevin de León in 2023.
