THE REDLIST is a screenplay competition from DSA-LA’s Hollywood Labor, created to promote socialist art and to provide a platform for writers from historically marginalized groups across the country. Our goal is to promote left-wing narratives in entertainment, and to highlight the experiences of the poor, the disenfranchised, and the oppressed. We want to shine a light on stories that Hollywood is afraid to tell–but hopefully not for much longer. The Redlist offers visibility to writers who may not have agents and managers, who may be in the early stages of their careers, and who may come from communities that are underrepresented in the entertainment industry.
We’re looking for CREATIVE, SMART, UNIQUE scripts — with a socialist bent — from writers of all backgrounds and experiences, particularly writers underrepresented in typical Hollywood productions.
Rules & Details
The Redlist will accept the following submissions:
Original feature film scripts
Original hour-long television pilot scripts
Original half-hour television pilot scripts
The Redlist does not allow the submission of any ancillary materials, included but not limited to: Series Bibles, Look Books, etc. We are looking for ORIGINAL CONTENT. You must own the rights to whatever you submit. However, adaptations of public domain material are permitted.
Your script MUST be socialist in nature (i.e. anti-imperialist, feminist, ecosocialist, anti-capitalist, or a combination of multiple aspects — see tags below). Scripts without socialist elements will be ignored, and the Redlist reserves the right to reject scripts that do not meet our criteria.
This first round of the competition is only open to DSA members in good standing. Please attach a screenshot of proof of membership from either proof.dsausa.org or your welcome email.
Winning scripts will be promoted by Hollywood Labor, and will receive meetings with industry professionals in a mentorship capacity.
