As part of the chapter resolution In Response to Crisis: A Neighborhood Solidarity Program by DSA-LA, the Political Education Committee is hosting this special event to examine the current capitalist economic crisis and its relationship to unemployment and underemployment.

Join us to explore why — in this moment — we should dedicate organizing efforts in solidarity with the poor, unemployed, underemployed, and precariously employed, and what opportunities this moment presents for the organized Left. RSVP to receive the Zoom link for this event.

There are two brief suggested readings to review in advance of the event. .to support and deepen discussion between comrades.

  • Wageless Life’ (New Left Review 2010, Denning): Denning explains that “capitalism begins with the imperative to earn a living,” and in this accessible 20-page piece he discusses the invention (and limitations) of the concepts of ‘unemployment’ and ‘informality’ as they relate to wage labour and our conception of life under capitalism in the 21st century.
  • 4-page excerpt from ‘Against Austerity: How We Can Fix the Crisis They Made’ (Seymour, 2014): This incisive excerpt explores ruling class arguments for austerity responses to crisis and outlines exactly how austerity benefits the ruling class.
